Dr. Katherine Burns is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with sub-specialty fellowship training in sports medicine and a dedicated interest in shoulder surgery. She serves patients in the greater St. Louis region at SSM Health DePaul Hospital.
Dr. Burns is engaged in teaching and research about rotator cuff injury and total shoulder reconstruction. She regularly instructs and presents at national and international meetings on shoulder surgery and is an active member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society. Dr. Burns has extensive research experience and has authored many papers in premier orthopedic journals, with a focus on improving patient outcomes after shoulder surgery.
Dr. Burns attended the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and graduated magna cum laude with degrees in biology and psychology. She was a member of several honor societies including Phi Beta Kappa and the Premedical Honor Society. She received her medical degree from the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, where she was nominated for Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical school honor society. Dr. Burns completed orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah, one of the top 25 orthopedic surgery programs in the country. After residency, Dr. Burns completed fellowship training for sports medicine at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, California, and completed an international traveling fellowship sponsored by the Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society in 2005 with a focus on shoulder surgery, and in France and Switzerland as well as several sites in the United States.
Dr. Burns is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine. She is also a member of The Forum, a society for women sports medicine surgeons.
